I install tiled bathrooms and wet rooms across the English Midlands, usually in older homes where the walls are rarely straight and the floors have seen several previous renovations. Over the years, I have fitted tile backer boards around baths, inside shower enclosures, beneath floor tiles, and across timber-framed partitions. I have learned that the board behind the tile can influence the finished job just as much as the adhesive, grout, or tile itself. A poor choice may remain hidden for months before movement, moisture, or weak fixings expose the mistake.
I Start With the Structure, Not the Tile
I never select a board simply because it is described as suitable for bathrooms. I first check whether I am working over timber studs, solid masonry, floorboards, plywood, or an existing tiled surface. Each background places different demands on the board, especially around weight, movement, fixing depth, and moisture exposure. On a typical stud wall, I check the spacing at several points because older partitions can vary by 10 or 15 millimetres from one section to another.
On walls, I want a board that remains flat once it is fixed and gives the tile adhesive a stable surface. Thin boards may be useful where space is tight, but I do not expect a flexible sheet to correct weak framing. If the studs move under hand pressure, I reinforce them before covering anything. That small repair is easier than removing a cracked tiled wall later.
Floors need a different assessment. I walk across the room, check for squeaks, inspect damaged boards, and look at the direction of the joists before deciding how to proceed. A backer board can help create a reliable tiling surface, but it cannot rescue a floor that bends heavily under normal foot traffic. I once worked on a bathroom where the previous installer had screwed boards over loose chipboard, and several grout joints opened within the first year.
I also consider the tile format before ordering materials. Large porcelain tiles demand a flatter background than small mosaics because even a slight ridge can make the edges sit unevenly. A 600 millimetre tile quickly reveals a wall that bows through the centre. I would rather spend an extra hour correcting the substrate than fight every tile during installation.
Material Differences Matter on Real Jobs
I use several types of backer board because no single product suits every room. Cement-based boards feel familiar and solid, although their weight can make installation slower in tight loft bathrooms. Foam-core boards are easier to carry upstairs and can be cut with simple tools, but every joint and fixing point must be treated according to the specified system. Fibre-reinforced boards often sit somewhere between those two approaches in handling and rigidity.
Before ordering, I compare the board thickness, fixing method, joint treatment, load capacity, and stated use rather than relying on the product name alone. I have found that the specifications shown by suppliers of tile backer board products can help me narrow down which board belongs on a wall, floor, or wet-area installation. I still match the final choice to the actual structure in front of me. Product claims are useful only when the installation conditions meet them.
Weight becomes a practical concern on larger projects. Carrying ten heavy sheets through a narrow staircase can damage walls before the bathroom work has even started. A lighter board may reduce handling time and make accurate positioning easier for one installer. That matters when I am fitting a full sheet around pipework and need to hold it steady while placing the first few fixings.
Cutting behaviour also affects my decision. Some boards create more dust and require outdoor cutting or extraction, while others can be scored and snapped with little mess. I once renovated a small en-suite on the third floor of a townhouse where every trip outside took several minutes. Choosing a board that could be cut cleanly inside saved a surprising amount of time.
I pay close attention to edge strength as well. Weak or damaged edges can crumble around fixings, particularly if screws are driven too close to the perimeter. I keep the correct spacing and avoid forcing a board into a gap that is slightly too narrow. Measure twice. A crushed edge is a poor foundation for joint tape and adhesive.
Water Resistance Does Not Replace Waterproofing
I often hear water-resistant and waterproof used as though they mean the same thing. I treat them as separate qualities. A board may tolerate damp conditions without swelling, yet the completed shower can still need sealed joints, treated corners, protected penetrations, and a suitable waterproof membrane. I follow the board manufacturer’s system rather than mixing random tapes, sealants, and coatings.
The highest-risk areas are rarely in the middle of a sheet. I focus on internal corners, pipe entries, niches, tray junctions, and the lower section of the shower where water collects most often. Around a standard shower valve, I cut the opening carefully and leave enough room for servicing without creating a large unprotected gap. A neat hole is easier to seal.
Last spring, I removed tiles from a shower that looked fine from the front but had dark staining around the bottom corner. The boards themselves had not completely failed, yet water had passed through an untreated joint beside the tray. The timber behind it was damp, and part of the framing needed replacement. The original installer had used a moisture-resistant board but skipped the full joint-sealing process.
I test my preparation visually before tiling. The surface should show continuous protection through corners and across every board connection, with no open screw holes or loose tape. In a recessed niche, I also check the fall on the lower shelf so water runs toward the shower rather than sitting against the back. A slope of only a few millimetres can make a meaningful difference.
Fixings and Joints Decide How the Surface Performs
I use the fixings approved for the board and substrate. Ordinary drywall screws may corrode, pull through, or fail to hold the board securely in a wet installation. On a framed wall, I mark every stud position before lifting the board into place so I am not searching for timber after the surface is covered. My fixing pattern normally follows the manufacturer’s spacing rather than a habit carried over from another product.
Screw depth needs control. A fixing should hold the board firmly without tearing through the face or leaving the head standing proud. If I drive one too far, I place another fixing nearby instead of pretending the damaged point is acceptable. That takes seconds.
At board joints, I leave the required gap and use the recommended tape or sealing strip. Forcing two sheets tightly together can create raised edges or leave no room for the specified joint treatment. I run a straightedge across the finished joint before adhesive touches the wall. Even a 2 millimetre ridge can become irritating under a large-format tile.
I stagger joints where the system calls for it and avoid lining up four board corners at one point. On floors, I also make sure board joints do not simply repeat the joints in the timber panels below. This reduces the chance of movement transferring directly through the finished tile surface. I have repaired enough cross-shaped cracks to treat joint layout seriously.
I Plan Around the Finished Bathroom
Board thickness affects more than the tiled area. I consider how the new surface will meet plaster, door casings, window reveals, shower trays, bath edges, and existing floor levels. A board that adds 12 millimetres may create an awkward step at the doorway once adhesive and tile are included. I calculate the full build-up before fixing the first sheet.
Fixtures need planning too. A heavy vanity, grab rail, glass screen, or wall-hung basin should not rely on tile and backer board alone unless the system is specifically designed for that load. I add timber noggins or suitable supports while the framing is open. One customer changed to a heavier glass screen after the walls were boarded, and opening the area again cost far more than early reinforcement would have.
Pipework positions can influence board layout. I try to keep narrow strips away from valves and corners because small pieces are harder to fix securely. Where possible, I adjust the sheet arrangement so major openings sit well inside a board rather than cutting through a joint. A 50 millimetre strip beside a shower control is rarely a good plan.
I dry-fit difficult sections before applying adhesive or sealant. This is especially useful around sloped ceilings, boxed pipework, and irregular stone walls. The extra check lets me correct the cut without rushing against setting material. It also keeps the finished joints cleaner.
Common Shortcuts I Refuse to Take
I do not tile over a board that rocks, drums, or moves under pressure. Adding more adhesive on top does not solve a weak connection underneath. I remove the sheet, identify the cause, and correct the fixing or substrate. That approach may feel slow during preparation, but it prevents a much larger delay after the tiles are installed.
I also reject badly stored boards. Sheets left outdoors can arrive bowed, damaged at the corners, or contaminated with dirt that interferes with bonding. On one renovation, several boards had been leaned against a damp garage wall for weeks. I replaced the worst sheets rather than building an expensive bathroom over questionable material.
Mixing systems is another shortcut I avoid. A board from one manufacturer, tape from another, and an unrelated liquid membrane may appear compatible, but I do not assume they have been tested together. I prefer a clear installation sequence with documented components. It also makes future troubleshooting far less uncertain.
Finally, I do not rush tiling before joint treatments or waterproof coatings are ready. Drying and curing periods vary with the product, temperature, humidity, and thickness of application. A cold room in winter may need more time than the label’s quickest estimate suggests. I would rather return the next morning than trap soft material beneath porcelain.
After years of fitting bathrooms, I see tile backer boards as part of the structure rather than a simple sheet placed behind attractive tiles. I choose them by studying the substrate, expected moisture, tile load, fixing system, and final floor or wall build-up. Careful preparation is rarely visible once the room is finished, but I notice its value every time a shower remains solid and dry after years of use. That is the result I plan for from the first measurement.
